There are a lot of elements involved in the organisation of the Relay and it has evolved a lot since the idea began in January so here is a video from our founder, Sophie Gifford and the answers to a few questions which will hopefully tell you everything you need to know about the Relay, how to join, how it will work and how to raise funds for our charities. Q.  I joined the Facebook group and gave my postcode – am I now registered to take part in the Relay?

A The Facebook group was created to gauge interest in the Relay which, back in January, was just an initial idea. Sophie needed to find out how many people were interested in taking part and in what areas of the country they were based so we could then figure out how to make it happen. You are a member of the Horses for Health UK Relay Facebook Group and now need to formally register by clicking here to go to our registrations microsite or click on the 'Join Now' button on the homepage.


Q.  How is the Relay going to work?

A. The Facebook Group has over 10,000 members across the UK so it’s impossible to do a set-route relay. Instead, 11 regions have been created, each having two weeks for participants to ride, carriage drive, walk or cycle. Within those regions, some will be doing ‘mini relays’ riding from A to B across counties via inter-connected bridleways – where that’s possible and safe to do so. Events are also being put on and will be publicised on the Regions tab of this website.  By registering you will receive the pack and information – by sponsoring you will be helping our 7 charities continue their very important and much needed work for our equines.


Q Do I have to pay to take part?

A There is a very modest registration fee of between £8-£15, dependent on which category you register for. All events require planning, set-up, risk assessment, publicity, printed materials & infrastructure and unfortunately these all cost money! The registration fee will go some way to covering those costs.  All the work involved in the relay is being carried out by volunteers in their spare time


Q. What will I get for my registration?

A  All participants will receive a membership pack which includes a branded hi-viz tabard and a rosette for taking part, along with other goodies, information and surprise gifts. After completion, registered participants will also get an e-mail with some fantastic discount codes for various suppliers.


Q How do I officially register?

Q What happens when I’ve done my ‘bit’?

A Our registrations microsite has an area being developed to enable you to upload pictures and/or details of where you’ve been, building a ‘collage’ of UK-wide horsey activity! Once you’ve uploaded your information (via the log-in you created at registration) you will receive a thank you email with more delightful gifts & offers – our way of letting you know how much you’ve helped horses, ponies and donkeys across the UK this summer!


Q What charities are you raising money for?

A We are raising money for seven equine welfare and health charities as follows:

Q How do we raise sponsorship for the charities?

A Donations can be made to the Horses for Health SponsorMe page at The Great Horses for Health UK Relay 2021 - Online fundraising Service (  This platform is run by the Charities Trust ensuring that all money goes directly to the registered charities. We would ask that you do not set up separate fund-raising pages as this will make it impossible for us to track progress against our target amount rendering it impossible to demonstrate to the charities how Horses for Health has supported them. Instead please share the link to the main page with all your friends, family & work colleagues – EVERYONE! Q Is there a minimum sponsorship amount we have to raise?

A Participants are not being asked to raise a minimum amount of money - we just ask you to share the SponsorMe link above as much as possible. Some events in the regions may have criteria which needs to be met to take part in, due to additional costs incurred to set up the activity – there will be plenty of choice of activities for people to decide which best suits them.


Q Will my route be organised for me?

A Some regions will be organising group rides along public bridleways and quiet roads, whilst other events will provide access to participants to private estate land which would not ordinarily be available for riding. COVID-19 restrictions may still be in place in the earlier regions and, of course, may be re-introduced, for which we have no control and so flexibility around the activities is key in order for us to be able to deliver the Relay in the best way possible in these difficult times. As events are organised we will publicise these on our Facebook group, via Instagram at #GreatHorses4HealthRelay and on the regional pages of this website  NB planning events is very much dependent on people registering – so don’t delay – Register today!


Q How many miles must I cover?

A It is entirely up to each individual how much and how often they ride during the 2 weeks of their Region. We just ask that when you complete your ride, you upload the activity you have done to the interactive site (where you registered to participate).


Q Can I do my ride as part of a fun ride not organised by Horses 4 Health?

A Yes, you can do your part of the Relay however you wish, but don’t let that stop you from donating to our SponsorMe page so that our charities can benefit from your support!


Q Do I have to ride or can I long-rein or carriage drive?

A The Great Horses for Health Relay is open to everyone, whether on a horse, on foot or on a bike!


Q Do I have to wear Hi-viz when I ride?

A One of our three key principles is road safety and the registration pack includes a branded hi-vis tabard. We ask everyone to wear high visibility clothing in whatever activity you choose to participate in, irrespective as to whether you will be riding on roads, or private land.
